This Cassowary story appeared in The Age, SMH, The Brisbane Times and SKY News and describes the bad news for cassowaries in Mission Beach. However, what is happening there – loss of habitat – is being replicated in Kuranda and surrounding districts. It is well and truly time to seriously lobby our federal, state and local government politicians, it is in your power to make a difference.
Click on names below to contact our elected politicians. We will provide contact details of all other candidates when any election is called and details are known.

8-19 Feb 2010 Plants and People
BZ3510/5510 Subject at James Cook University Cairns
This is a great opportunity for KCons members over 50 years of age to attend this subject free of charge (and others, it is well worth checking out) if a member of U3A . See more details on the U3A website, click on JCU.
Plants and people focuses on the study of the past, present, and future uses of plants, and of the relationship between plants and people. We depend on plants, using them or their products in nearly all of daily activities. Many plants also depend on humans for their existence, and many more are affected by our ways of life. But how has this interdependence come about? Are we using plants sustainably? Could we be using them better? And how will people’s use of plants change in the future? This subject examines these and other fundamental questions, drawing on both plant sciences and the social sciences. Through it, students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation both of the economic and cultural importance of plants and of the role of plant sciences in society.
